2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport Owner's Manual
The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a shortened version of the largest seven-seater SUV in the German brand’s lineup, the Volkswagen Atlas. The younger brother is 70 mm shorter and 60 mm lower than the base model, leaving 203 mm of ground clearance, subtly hinting at the car’s sportier nature. Accordingly, the target group of buyers has changed from large families to a wider audience of customers.
VAG offers the 2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport model in 18 trim levels. The basic version will cost the future owner about $30,000 and with the top set of additional equipment, the price of the SUV will reach $50,000.
Despite the proper advertising campaign and updated design, according to car critics, the top equipment for such money makes no sense, because the Atlas Cross Sport does not reach the level of equipment and functionality of cars in a similar price range. Despite the wide variety of configurations, the car’s interior is made of fairly rigid plastic without the use of expensive finishing materials.
With the release of the updated model, the German automaker intends to compete with such cars as Nissan Murano and Ford Edge.
2023 VW Atlas Cross Sport Specifications
On the technical side of the car, the designers did not change anything radically, despite the reduction in the overall dimensions of the car, the wheelbase remained unchanged at 2980 mm. The car’s body underwent a lot of radical improvements. The model received a shortened rear overhang and roof pillars, instead of an additional row of seats, the luggage compartment now has a flat floor, and the five-seat crossover interior ends with a sloping trunk lid. Otherwise, the SUV retains the same solid design with a high hood and pronounced wheel arches.
Two types of engines are installed under the hood of the Atlas Cross Sport:
1. The base version is equipped with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 240 hp, which, to put it mildly, is not enough, given the ratio of total weight and dimensions to rated power.
2. The second engine to choose from, which is installed on the crossover, is a 3.6-liter V-6 with a capacity of 280 hp. Very tractable unit, already at 2750 rpm it produces its maximum torque value of 360 N.m., which allows the owner to tow a trailer weighing up to 2 tons.
The engine accelerates the car to the 100km/h in 8 seconds, which is impressive for an SUV, with a top speed of 217 km/h.
In both cases, the engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which changes speeds smoothly and almost imperceptibly for the driver.
All-wheel drive is available as an option, with Hill Descent Assist technology to assist on steep slopes. Despite the high technological sophistication of the model, the car’s suspension is very reliable: the front is a MacPherson independent spring, and the rear axle has an independent multi-link system with a stabilizer.
On the asphalt surface, the rather large Atlas Cross Sport feels very confident, the suspension system is more elastic than its predecessor, but still, when driving around corners, the body is prone to slight rolls. It is also worth noting the assessments of leading car experts regarding insufficient noise insulation from the wheel arches and doors.
