The basis of Volkswagen up! is a platform with McPherson struts in front suspension (but without stabilizer bar which the engineers have sacrificed for weight reduction) and semi-independent torsion beam behind. Absence of front stabilizer bar was partially compensated by Germans with thicker profile subframe, having worked a lot on reduction of overall weight of the city-car. Thus, its body is made of 75% high-strength steels. As a result, the body is light and its torsional rigidity turned out to be one of the best in the class – 19,800 Nm/gr.
